I entered the Lilla Rogers Global Talent Search because I love the work of her artists (esp. the amazing Suzy Ultman) and when I watched Lilla speak on video, I felt like she and I were kindred spirits. (I hate "competitive" art, really; but having a deadline that I am expected to meet helps me a lot.) When the fifty semi-finalists were announced and I went browsing through the posted gallery, I hardly felt nervous; I was 100% certain I would not find my name listed. But there it was. What a huge boost of confidence for me! I haven't any art training, and though I colored my way through college, the end result was a Theology degree. (You know, b/c it would be more "useful".) I'm so excited to be doing more and more of what I love. So the next step is self-promotion, and I'm terrible, terrible at that. But you can vote for my little anxious mouse who has found himself in possession of a whale here.
I used watercolor, which I photographed and scanned in, then Adobe Illustrator to create. I wanted the little mouse fellow to really carry a story, and to be someone you might center a book around. My daughters approve, but my sons feel he ought to also have a sword.
